The 2019 Fiat 124 Spider is not as fast or as agile as the more expensive Porsche Boxster. It can not match the lighter, more agile performance of the car on which it is based, the Mazda MX 5 Miata. Large drivers will find the cab a bit narrow for long term comfort. If you’re looking for a small convertible, fun and affordable, with a style and attitude that far exceeds its low price, the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider tops the list. The Fiat 4 cylinder turbo offers a different driving experience than a Mazda MX 5, as does the reworked cabin.
Fiat used its roadsters to bring the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider into a new era. Some of the signs echo those of its different roadsters of the 60s and share nothing with the Miata, in terms of sheet metal. The Fiat 124 is even 5 inches longer than the MX 5, and its front and rear overhangs are longer. The differences jump from the front ends of cars. Miata’s frown becomes a honeycomb on the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider. Eyepiece headlights with optional LED lighting define the front corners and a large air inlet is flanked by fog lights along the horizontal. This is a tribute to the classic 124 Spider, even to the concave print on the hood that inverts the protuberances of the classic classical dome. The differences become more pronounced towards the back. Where the Miata sinks and narrows, the Fiat gets up and draws attention to the width of her behind. It is beautiful, but not as much as in its face as the Mazda despite the keys that distinguish the different models: Classica classic color and body ornament, the silver keys of Lusso and the metallic gray of Abarth, sometimes associated with a black hood . Fiat pays more attention to the interior finish than Mazda. The simple shapes of sports cars have better materials, especially on the panel and door covers and in the instrument log. Mazda places the body color plastic on top of its doors inside the cabin, but Fiat applies soft plastic to the touch.
The 2019 Fiat 124 Spider has only two seats and is made of nets and urethane instead of springs, as is the case for the firmest seats. They may be comfortable for a few hours, but over long distances, assistance is not enough. In terms of human space, this generation of Miata/Spider works better with passengers than the previous ones. The seats are lower and offer more room for stretched legs, with enough height under the convertible for comfort of 6 feet. In the cabin, the controls and storage containers of the Fiat are down. The infotainment system driver provided by Mazda is too far behind the shifter to be easily used. A small tray behind the driver’s right elbow offers some of the spider’s limited storage space. The cupholder system is more like a virtue sign system: two mobile cupholders sit in three slots around the car, making room for the passenger’s legs, out of reach of the driver. Whether you’re crazy or not, and if you are, maybe a bigger vehicle will feel better for you. Fiat updates the interior materials for 124, compared to what you will find in the Miata. Hard plastics on the top of the board and doors are exchanged for softer materials. There is more sound insulation around the cabin and under the car. Tire noise is still known and closing the roof amplifies the noise of the road. The Fiat falls flat in the cargo area, too. The trunk of 4.9 cubic feet contains hardly a single bag, but it is a half cube larger than the Miata. Based on Classica, Fiat gives the 124 a six way driver’s seat and a four way adjustable passenger seat, electrical features, air conditioning, fabric upholstery, keyless access, cruise control, 16 inch wheels, tilt steering and four AM/FM speaker system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity and 3.0 inch screen. Options include satellite radio, a 7.0 inch audio display and a version of the infotainment controller that we tested and rejected on the Mazda roadster. It is an obsolete wheel control system that requires too many steps to change station or source. You need a reboot. Lusso spiders are equipped with automatic climate control, fog lamps, 17 inch wheels and heated leather seats. Options include LED headlights, a nine speaker Bose sound system and navigation. Abarth 124 Spiders are our selection of alignment. They add a limited slip differential and Bilstein dampers, a sport mode selector in automatically equipped vehicles, a firmer suspension tuning, leather seats and a special steering wheel and gear selector. Abarth options include Recaro sports seats, a hood strip and upgraded Brembo brakes. Other options include blind spot monitors, rear parking sensors and heated mirrors.
Mazda and Fiat use 4 cylinder engines to work under the hood of their sports cars. The Mazda engine has been upgraded this year, but it remains naturally aspirated, with a displacement of 2.0 liters and 168 hp. On the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider, Fiat becomes a 4 cylinder 1.4 liter turbocharged cam. With a power of up to 22 pounds of turbo, it can lose 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque on basic cars, or 164 hp on the Abarth model, thanks to a less restrictive exhaust system. The Miata was the strongest in the pair and became stronger this year with a major overhaul of its engine. The Fiat has not changed and, although it only takes 6.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h, it is reduced for a moment of the line, until its turbo delay dissolves into an explosion of the tail. The lack of low end energy becomes more noticeable in automatic transmission spiders. The levers of change help, but only the Abarth model has them. The 6 speed manual transmission helps reduce some of the delay and shifts with smart, clean action. On the highway, the 124 had the chance to get a strong reaction from passengers, thanks to the turbo. The Fiat 124 weighs about 100 pounds more than the Miata, but both are light. The 124 is recorded at £ 2.436, allowing you to dive from corner to corner with light movements. He is very good in cornering and the quality of walking continues to be flexible: Fiat adjusts to use the tilt of the body to absorb some of the impacts of the highway. Once the direction indicated and the suspension launched, Spider 124 turns resolutely and this inclination of the body results in a return. It’s a predictable and precise car to drive close to its limits. This softer suspension also leaves room for Abarth adjustments, which include boom tower strengthening and Bilstein dampers. The settings only allow Abarth to deliver faster and better respond to controller inputs.
See the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider as an imagined Mazda Miata and you could expect a higher price, but that’s not the case. A Spider Classica equipped with a manual slips with a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 26,290, including the destination. Meanwhile, the edge of Lusso starts at over 29,000 USD and offers leather seats at a much lower price than the Miata Grand Touring, while the Spider Abarth, performance oriented, starts just north of $ 31,000. If you prefer to sit for more than two minutes, the Convertible Mini Cooper and Volkswagen Beetle Convertible of the final edition can be obtained for only $ 27,000 and $ 28,000, respectively.
